      ROLLING RIDGE ELEMENTARY YMCA  AFTER-SCHOOL

Y STEM Education is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking

Lesson 1

Planting seeds and scientifically observing how different vegetables will grow, using our Opcom farms Grow Box. This has been very exciting because the theme of  spring is, the study of "seeds" and plant propagation as apart of the opcom farm garden grow box program.

YOUTH OUT COMES; MORE THAN JUST  FUN AND GAMES

Our Y stem progrm offers hands-on based projects thats provide experiences

that instill valuable 21st century skills in the next generation of innovative thinkers.

A. Youth will learn  how Opcom applied science & technology on growing plants all year long.

B. Youth will have hands on expienence on learning about agriculture.

C. Youth will demostrate good problem solving skills, judgement while displaying appropriate behavior.

E. Reading and Understanding how to follow directions, using problem solving skills.

F. Appling  math skills, for setup and montoring system and learning about PH. & EC levels.

G. Youth will display Y Signage to promote Heathy Eating awareness.

Lesson 2

WHAT ARE HYDROPONICS?

Every growing plant needs three basic things: light, water, and nutrients. In traditional agriculture, plants grow outside and the sun provides the light, irrigation systems supply the water, and soil provides the nutrients plants need to grow. Hydroponics is a different form of agriculture that can be done indoors and it refers to the cultivation of plants in nutrient-rich water without the use of soil. Since hydroponics can be an indoor technology, lighting is essential.

Provide an immersive, hands-on STEM learning experience.

 1: Introduction to Hydroponics
Discusses the early history of hydroponics and gives a brief overview of how hydroponic technolog.ies work.

 2: OPCOM Farm Hydroponic Technologies
Provide an overview of the various types of technologies used in OPCOM hydroponic systems.

 3: Light
Discusses the physics of light in relationship to plant growth and covers topics such as the electromagnetic spectrum, visible light, and photosynthesis.

4: Nutrients

Teach students about the 17 nutrients essential to plant health, including molecular structures and chemical formulas, and how these nutrients affect plant functions.

5: Planting
Introduce students to plant biology, the types of plants that can be grown hydroponically, and to the maintenance requirements for successfully growing plants in a hydroponic system.

 6: Environmental Benefits
Highlights the environmental benefits of hydroponic technologies including indoor air purification, the chemistry of indoor toxins, water savings, and energy usage.
